Book Review: Subversive by Raena Rood

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A Christian dystopian thriller where a young woman named Gemma’s love and faith are tested as she strives to survive a world where Christianity is outlawed.

  • Premise & Pacing. You don’t see too many Christian dystopian books out there, so this was a refreshing original premise with very consistent pacing for a book in the action-drama genre.
  • Characters. The characters seemed to be fleshed out well and their POVs seemed balanced enough.
  • Twists. While I thought that some parts would be predictable, I was happy to be proven wrong!
  • Not too preachy. I am a Christian, but sometimes books containing Christian tropes get too preachy and therefore I am taken out of the story; but, thankfully, this wasn’t the case here.

  • Gemma. I didn’t not like her too much, but I would have liked to see her a little more brave in parts when she seemed near to falling apart.

I think I may buy this book! The pacing kept me engaged and I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!

Spice Level: 2/5 (no sex; some passionate kissing)

Violence/Gore: 4/5 (some torture and death scenes)

Drugs/Alcohol: 3/5 (some smoking and drinking from the antagonists)

Profanity: 0/5 (none that I can remember)
